Soundscaper, Vibe Curator, Festival Veteran: Maddy O’Neal
By Lucie Donovan In light of the upcoming Sol Fest festival in Ponce de Leon, Florida, Denver Lynx Radio had the opportunity to chat with Denver based artist, Maddy O’Neal. Originally a Saint Louis native (Kirkwood High School graduate, for Saint Louisans wondering the obvious question), O’Neal was raised surrounded by music. “My dad was in bands, my brother was in bands, and I dabbled.” She says, recounting her early music exposure. While music entered her life at a young age, O’Neal did not lean heavily into music until later. “You know, I played piano, then I played cello when I was younger. Then I kind of did the sibling thing, I was like......
"God Said 'Let There Be Spitting Image'"
By Lucy Lassman “Originally, there was no light and then God said let there be Spitting Image.” This was the band’s answer to my first question which asked for an explanation of how Spitting Image came to be. A quick-witted response that incited laughter between me and the band’s members: Marshall Kadlec, Ethan Piskorz, Jesse Nissen, and Davion Tomlinson, later proved to be an accurate statement after watching the band’s electrifying performance on stage. The show took place on March 29th, at HQ, one of the various music venues in the eclectic area that is South Broadway. Boasting a Spring Break theme, the space was brimming with pink beach balls and......
THE DRAWN OUT
By Annie Bennet The Marquis Theater is bathed in blues and greens as eager concert-goers mill around the room. The doors have only been open for fifteen minutes, but the floor is already beginning to fill up; every table is taken, every barstool occupied. As I take in the sights, sounds, and smells of the concert venue, I’m approached by two beautiful young women–they are Mackenzie and Cassidy Harlan, respectively the songwriter and lead singer of local alternative band The Drawn Out. It’s them I’m here to see as they patiently await their opening set for The Snuts. I follow them through a labyrinth of back halls and stage equipment that leads me to a small but......
Frost Children: Exploring the Frontier of Hyper-Pop Fusion
By Blu Fernandez and Augie Schroeder As we walked into Larimer Lounge, affectionately named “Larry’s,” we sat at the bar and nervously awaited our interview. The band’s manager came to tell us Frost Children were ready, and approaching the back of the dimly lit club, we were guided to an outside area behind two graffiti-clad doors. Inside were the three members of Frost Children, Lulu and Angel, lead Guitarists/Vocalists, and their drummer Eden. Frost Children are a hyper-pop group hailing from New York made up of siblings Angel and Lulu Prost. With over 200,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, they bring a unique blend of influences to their music, drawing......
autumnal: fuzz-folk from fort collins
autumnal took the stage at Globe Hall on November 10th, with Alexalone and headliner Palehound. The band immediately earned the support of the audience with their vibrant stage presence and soulful performance. Even after leaving the stage, the audience continued to enthusiastically support the band at the merch table. Originally a duo of childhood friends, autumnal is a four-person band out of Fort Collins. Explaining the origins of their name, “We just liked the season fall. The first couple songs we wrote were all fall and Halloween themed.” Now, the band defines themselves as a fuzz-folk band. Even through this folk base, the band incorporates spoken word, belting vocals,......
Gabe James on Growing up in Colorado, Inspiration, and New Music.
Gabe James made a trip back to Denver to play a sold out show at Globe Hall on March 10th. Fans in his home town showed out to support a local artist and spent the night screaming the lyrics to James’ newest releases like “Rollin’ Dice.” His connection with his fans was overwhelmingly apparent throughout the show. The crowd stayed rowdy and energized, which was undeniably fed by James’ lively stage presence. photo by Isabel Benneyworth (@bizzy.photo) Gabe James is currently living in Los Angeles, but he hails from Colorado. “During high school I lived in Morrison, Colorado, in the foothills out by Red Rocks [Amphitheater]. I could practically......
